Caverly Smith

Since obtaining her Bachelor’s Degree in Illustration from Sheridan College in Ontario, Caverly Smith has worked in various areas, from producing mock-ups for a fast-paced advertising firm, to a laid-back arts-and-crafts booth at a Farmer’s Market, to commissioned work as a freelance artist and designing collections for fabric manufacturers.

While living in Nova Scotia with her family, Caverly’s work was inspired by her maritime surroundings. During that time she captured the seascapes through her mastery of oil painting with palette knife techniques, though her true love is a watercolour, line-and-wash, whimsical style of art and illustration, which she considers to be her specialty.

Caverly and her sister-in-law Julia Wentzell, make up Briar Hill Designs, where Caverly uses her watercolour artwork to create repeatable patterns for quilting cotton fabric. Their fabric collections, distributed by Robert Kaufman Fabrics, can be found in fabric shops across North America. Caverly continues to create beautiful and unique surface pattern designs, available for licensing, and illustrations ready to brighten someone's day.

Caverly has now settled in lovely Lambeth, Ontario, where her supportive husband and three small children influence her storybook style.
